How to Get a Facial at Home

Do it yourself FacialNext to a massage, facials are the most popular spa treatments. Regular facial treatments can make you look younger and more beautiful by thoroughly cleaning your face from dead skin cells. Facial masks are also applied to help nourish the skin on your face and also drawing out those impurities deep within your pores that can cause blemishes.

But getting a facial treatment in a spa can be quite expensive in the long run. One easy way to save money and still have glowing skin is by getting a facial at home. Here’s how to do it:

Clean Your Face

Start your home facial treatment by cleaning your face with a good facial cleanser that is suited for your face. Dampen your face with warm water and lather up a pea-size amount of your facial cleanser in between your palms before applying it onto your face. Make sure that you use circular strokes as you do this. Focus on your forehead, nose and chin because that is usually the oiliest part of your face. Rinse with warm water. Pat your face with a clean towel or facial tissue.

Steam Your Face

Boil some water and pour it into a clean basin. Get a large towel. Lean your face as close as you can to the hot water and cover your head and the basin with the towel. Keep in this position for about five minutes. This will help open up your pores and cause impurities trapped within them to be pushed onto the surface of your skin with the help of sweat coming from your sweat glands. I’d recommend that you grab a chair before you do this step so that you can sit down and be comfortable while you’re steaming your face.

If you want, you can also squeeze half a lemon into the water. Lemon juice has antioxidants that help get rid of free radicals and toxins in your skin.

Exfoliate

While your face is still damp, apply a thin film of exfoliating scrub onto your face. Then, using a facial brush or sponge, gently massage the exfoliating scrub in a circular motion. Again, focus more on your forehead, nose and chin areas. If you have sensitive skin, I’d suggest using just your fingers since using a facial brush or sponge can cause your skin to get red and sore. Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel or facial tissue.

Apply Your Facial Mask

Get your favorite facial mask and apply a thin film all around your face and allow it to dry based on the instructions provided on the packaging, which is usually between 15-20 minutes. To get the feeling of being in a spa, slice up some cucumber to put on your eyes. If you don’t have any at home, just dampen two cotton balls and put these on your eyes. Turn on some soothing music and lie down. Since you do not have the benefit of someone waking you up after this part, you may want to set your alarm just in case you do doze off so that you can remove your mask with warm water afterwards.

Strip Away Blackheads from Your Nose

If your nose is prone to blackheads and other blemishes, now is the time to apply your pore strip. Dampen your nose area with water and apply the pore strip. Usually, I would use the back end of my eyeshadow brush to press the nose pore strip down, especially around the sides and corners of my nose to make sure that there are no bubbles and every single part of the pore strip is glued onto my nose. Wait for about 10-15 minutes and then gently peel this away by grabbing the pore strip from the sides, moving towards the center. Rinse out your face and nose with warm water.

Tone and Moisturize

Moisten a cotton ball with a toner of your choice and gently stroke this all over your face. Toners help reduce any inflammation, especially after using the pore strip. It also helps lift away any stubborn impurities that may still remain on your skin.

Finally, moisturize your skin. This will help your skin retain moisture preventing it from drying out. If you have oily or combination skin, choose a moisturizer with an oil-free formula as regular moisturizers can cause your skin pores to get clogged up.

Some Final Tips:

1. When getting a facial at home, I would recommend to use purified or distilled water for washing and rinsing your face. Tap water has got a lot impurities that can easily be left behind once the water evaporates from your skin.

2. If you suffer from acne or any other similar skin conditions, be sure to first consult with your dermatologist before giving yourself a home facial or following any of the steps mentioned here.

One Response to How to Get a Facial at Home

  1. I love going to the spa, but it is indeed a bit expensive. I’m going to do this on my rest day. I usually have a “spa day” at home. But it’s not as elaborate as this one. 🙂 Thanks for the tips.
